Jan van
Schooten

Seeing the reality just beyond reality.

Jan van Schooten lets himself wander, drift, and go with the flow to capture whatever catches his attention. He is drawn to colors, contrast, and balance. Details don’t interest him as much as the feeling of that moment — dreamlike, surreal images that provoke and fuel the imagination.

Many years ago, he began experimenting by breaking the hard and fast rules of photography. A creative counterpart to his daily life as a high-end commercial photographer in Amsterdam. He creates real images with real people — real moments in time.

AI calls his work “quantum photography,” which he finds amusing. When he goes out to shoot, he is in a “superposition,” letting the universe decide the shot. He calls his art form Peinture de Lumière — he paints with light.

Wherever he points his lens is his home.

Peinture de Lumière
Van Schooten calls his approach Peinture de Lumière — painting with light. Beyond technique, it embodies a deeper philosophy he terms Quantum Photography: the ability to see and feel an alternate reality that exists simultaneously with our own — one that lies just beyond normal perception, until close and attentive observation reveals it. His images don’t freeze a moment. They dissolve it into something truer.

Purple Rider
Speed rendered as colour. A cyclist dissolves into a sky that shouldn’t exist — pastel, infinite, humming. Motion as a form of freedom.

Night Frequency

Night Frequency
After midnight, the city emits its own light. Figures move through a frame of purple and black — present and absent at once. A frequency only the camera can hear.

Three Souls

Three Souls
Three figures walking, each in their own corona of light. The yellow-green haze behind them is not background — it is atmosphere, mood, the feeling of an afternoon already half-remembered.

Three figures moving through a city bathed in thermal gold. The ground reflects what the sky holds.
